Literacy Programmes

Public Speaking Programme

At Scholar Base, we train your child What to say, How to present, Who to catch the attention. We give the opportunity for your child to stand on the stage regularly, before the group of his friends to give a presentation with boldness and confidence. The child will be participating in poem recitation, storytelling, choral speaking, speech and drama, and singing on our stage.

FIRST STAGE:

The child must be able to speak English language, or at least communicate with words or sentences. A young child learns by listening and repeating what he listens.

SECOND STAGE:

Understanding helps in the flow of the performance, be it a song, a poem or lines in a drama or dialogue.

THIRD STAGE:

The child needs to memorise what needs to be presented, and sometimes with the help of using pictures, action or props. Fluency in English helps in presenting as the child sometimes uses his own words.

FOURTH STAGE:

Enhance presentation skills such as:

a. Voice quality
- tone and pitch

b. Position
- where and how to stand or sit on the stage

c. Format
- greeting and closing lines

d. Body language
- such as face expression, body gestures, eye contact

FIFTH STAGE:

Practice, practice, practice. With every practice, the teacher gives  encouragement, motivation and positive feedback.

Reading Programme

In our Reading programme, children as young as 4 years old will learn to apply ‘Scholar Phonics’, a technique that enables them to blend sounds with letters. They grasped this method first by listening to the blending sounds, then followed by sighting the combination of sounds. There are 3 levels in the Reading programme: Basic, Intensive and Extensive.

Basic Module
(4 - 5 years old)

This is the foundation level where the children are introduced to ‘Scholar Phonics’ and apply it to blend the sounds and letters. This method is consistently used when they read sentences and paragraphs. We also focus on the development of their speech, communication, and self-confidence, where they present songs and nursery rhymes on the stage.

Duration: 1 year.

Intensive Reading
(5 - 6 years old)

Children embark their reading journey at this level where they start to read storybooks with many words and expand their imagination. Their vocabulary range increases as they enjoy the adventures with Aladdin and his genies. Students get to present their poems and songs on the stage.

Duration: 6 months

Extensive
(6 - 7 years old)

At this level, our students who are confident readers will progress to read longer stories. They are guided to read pages of words with less pictures as they imagine their adventures with Pinocchio, at the same time expand their vocabulary range. They enjoy singing Pinocchio songs and recite poems on the stage.

Duration: 6 months

Writing Programme

Students who have the ability to read story books are ready to embark their writing journey. In this programme, the children develop their writing skills, from writing simple sentences to developing creative essays. The literacy developments also include reading stories of more complex plots, communicating and public speaking. The children will perform dramas with costumes during the Year-End Performance. There are 3 levels of writing programme: Basic Writing, Essay Writing and Advanced Writing.

Basic Writing
(7 - 8 years old)

This level introduces the fundamental rules of writing which include grammar, comprehension and sentencing. Students have fun activities which include spelling, dictation, storytelling and role-playing. At the same time, they read simplified classics such as Alice in the wonderland, Wizard of Oz and Mark of Zorro. They will role-play their characters and learn to act in dramas on the stage.

Duration: 1.5 years

Essay Writing
(9 -10 years old)

At this level, the students learn how to translate their thoughts onto words, and organize their sentences into paragraphs. They need to be mindful of their grammar at the same time, the flow from one sentence to another. They read longer classic stories such as James and the Giant Peach, Treasure Island, Tom Sawyer and Around the world in 80 days, and will act out the characters in the stories at the Year-end Performance.

At this level, they are exposed to narrative, descriptive, persuasive writings, and they would have developed their own style of writing. They will read unabridged story books such as Narnia series, Harry Potter series, Oliver Twists, Tales of Greek Heroes and Norsemen Mythology. They also act the storybook characters in the drama at the Year-end Performance.

How We Do It

Thinking

At Scholar Base, students are encouraged to ask questions, to be curious as this leads to creative thinking. Students are given activities and project-based work that encourage creativity and imagination.

Understanding

Each student learns differently and we adapt to the student’s personal preference for learning and their strengths when we allow them to experience the learning process. With observing, listening and experiential learning, students are able to widen their understanding.

Communication

It is important that students learn to articulate their own opinions respectfully and clearly by their own logical reasoning and thinking processes. We help students to think aloud, formulate ideas, dissect the thinking process and communicate clearly across.

Concentration

Children develop discipline and to stay focused on a task without being easily distracted and abandoning their on-going activities. This gives them a sense of accomplishment and success when they achieve a milestone.

IQ/EQ

Students need both IQ and EQ in order to function successfully in the “real world” outside the walls of their school. At Scholar Base, students are taught to think creatively and make intelligent projection based on known facts and gut feel.

Confidence

With great reading, writing, thinking and communication skills, students develop positive self-esteem. They are able to develop into aspiring youth that are ready to take on challenges and conquer fears that lie ahead.
